Quintana Roo Agencies Develop Sustainable Mobility Plan for Cancún and Isla Mujeres

Officials and staff participate in a workshop to develop a sustainable mobility plan for the Cancún and Isla Mujeres metropolitan area.

Cancún, Quintana Roo — State agencies in Quintana Roo have launched a collaborative effort to develop a comprehensive sustainable mobility plan for the metropolitan area encompassing Cancún and Isla Mujeres.

The Secretariat of Sustainable Urban and Territorial Development (Sedetus) and the Quintana Roo Mobility Institute (Imoveqroo) jointly announced they conducted a workshop to create the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan for the Benito Juárez and Isla Mujeres Metropolitan Zone.

Municipal staff from both state institutions participated in developing the Cancún-Isla Mujeres Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan. Sedetus Secretary José Alberto Alonso Ovando attended the interagency working sessions and emphasized that this initiative will enable more efficient and safer mobility planning.

“Working closely with Sedetus Secretary José Alberto Alonso Ovando, the Benito Juárez Municipal Planning Institute and its director Héctor Sánchez Tirado, along with the transportation directors of Isla Mujeres and Benito Juárez, Alejandra Peniche and Vanessa Valenzuela, we collaborated on the Mobility Plan for the Benito Juárez-Isla Mujeres Metropolitan Zone,” posted Rafael Hernández Kotasek, head of Imoveqroo, on social media.

Hernández Kotasek expressed appreciation for the coordination with Sedetus and the participation of representatives from both municipalities during working sessions that addressed active mobility, public transportation, intermodality, and road safety. “We continue building safer, more accessible, and sustainable mobility for everyone,” he stated.

Isla Mujeres recently approved its own Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan on February 10 as part of strategic actions to manage municipal growth and improve quality of life for residents and visitors.

The new metropolitan plan aims to enhance mobility between Isla Mujeres and the mainland, making transportation safer, faster, and more equitable while minimizing environmental impact.
