PUERTO MORELOS, Mexico — Punta Brava, in Puerto Morelos, is advancing through studies to become a cargo dock intended to boost the local economy and complement the transportation infrastructure of the Maya Train.

With only a pre-feasibility study completed, the Punta Brava zone is being projected as the potential site for a cargo dock. The project is envisioned to stimulate the economy of Quintana Roo and align with the anticipated initiation of cargo transport via the Maya Train. However, the process is currently in a preliminary phase, involving visits to various agencies to determine the possibility of its construction.

In this regard, the Director General of the Integral Port Administration of Quintana Roo (APIQROO), Vagner Elbiorn Vega, confirmed that a pre-feasibility study has been conducted in the Punta Brava zone of Puerto Morelos for the possible construction of a cargo dock. The process is ongoing and now involves engaging with federal institutions.

According to the official, the current dock in this municipality receives barely one vessel per week. Furthermore, due to depth conditions, it is not possible to expand it because limestone exists on the seabed, making an extension for the intended purposes impossible. The area on the left side of the existing dock is adjacent to a protected zone.

However, the pre-feasibility studies for Punta Brava have yielded positive results. Consequently, efforts are now focused on engaging with federal instances to secure the necessary approvals for subsequent feasibility studies. Only after those studies are completed can a full project with all its projections be developed.

Elbiorn Vega clarified that the project under consideration is for a cargo dock, not a cruise dock. He emphasized that pending positive feedback and authorization to conduct the zone's feasibility studies, an initial project plan would be integrated to give continuity to the initiative.

The intention, he stated, is to have a cargo dock that would streamline and boost the supply of raw materials for the tourism sector and other industries requiring maritime transport. Additionally, it would serve to align with the projects and announcements regarding the evolution of the Maya Train for cargo transportation.
