Playa del Carmen, Mexico — A property where illegal tree felling was taking place was shut down this Monday by the Secretary of the Environment, through its Directorate of Regulation and Environmental Impact Assessment.
Residents of the area reported the tree cutting around 2:00 p.m. after observing machinery knocking down vegetation on the property located at the corner of Calle 4 and 20 Avenida. The situation generated concern over the environmental impact on the area, prompting neighbors to notify the corresponding authorities.
Personnel from the Secretary of the Environment arrived at the location shortly after to verify the conditions under which the work was being carried out. During the inspection, personnel from this agency confirmed the report and corroborated that those responsible did not possess the required permits to conduct the tree felling.
Due to this irregularity, work was immediately halted as a preventive measure. Finally, the property was formally closed by the inspectors. (Agencia SIM)
