Cancun, Quintana Roo — Owners of the dogs and cats that were found at a clandestine crematorium called Xibalbá, located in Chetumal, have until tomorrow to come and identify them, according to Alonso Fernández Lemmen Meyer, head of the Procuraduría de Protección al Ambiente (PPA).

Identification Process and Impending Disposal

"A photo catalog was made of all the animal remains, and we have been working with people so they can identify their pets. We were open Saturday and Sunday; we set up a room at the Procuraduría de Protección al Ambiente in Chetumal so that people can go and see the catalog in detail on a computer or physically printed in a catalog," said Fernández Lemmen Meyer. "So, this will continue until Tuesday, today as well, and at the end of Tuesday, we will proceed with the incineration of the remains."

He assured that the Fiscalía General del Estado has approximately 40 people who have filed reports for having acquired services from this illegally established business.

"(However) this does not mean they have recovered their pets' remains or that they have been able to identify them," the official warned.

Statewide Oversight and Inspections Planned

Fernández Lemmen Meyer stated that, so far, the PPA has no reports of another clandestine crematorium in the state, though he warned that an operation is being prepared to supervise the operation of these businesses.

"From the state government, we are already coordinating with the municipalities; we have sent official letters requesting all their databases on this type of business with these operational focuses, so that within our competency, which is environmental, they can check that they are in order. But we are also requesting that the municipalities do their part so their regulatory areas can verify that these businesses are operating regularly," he detailed.

The information from the municipalities is expected to be delivered to the PPA next week, after which the inspections will be carried out.
