Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — A taxi union in Playa del Carmen has responded after a video went viral showing one of its drivers in a heated dispute with foreign tourists over a fare.

The incident involved a driver from the Lázaro Cárdenas del Río union, identified by vehicle number 445. In the video, the driver allegedly demanded 200 pesos for a ride, while the tourists claimed they had agreed to pay 100 pesos.

According to the footage, the driver refused to let the passengers exit the vehicle and drove them through additional streets against their will to pressure them into paying the higher amount. During the argument, the driver issued a threat that was captured on camera: “Don’t pay me anything, I’ll have you thrown in jail so you learn…”

The union’s leadership committee issued a statement saying that after reviewing the incident and gathering different accounts, they determined the service involved multiple stops during the same trip, including additional drop-offs not included in the initial fare. According to the driver’s version, the disagreement arose when passengers objected to the cost increase from these extra movements.

The union explained that during the dispute with the tourists, the driver sought police intervention to mediate the situation and clarify the appropriate charge. However, the organization acknowledged that the behavior seen in the video does not reflect the conduct they aim to promote among their members.

The union reiterated that it maintains a zero-tolerance policy toward acts of violence or improper conduct and will conduct an internal review of the driver’s actions. They also expressed willingness to cooperate with authorities if needed to clarify the facts.
