Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Mayor Estefanía Mercado presided over the Twenty-Third Ordinary Session of the City Council, where the use of the color "Arena Playa" (Beach Sand) was unanimously approved as the official and representative distinctive of the municipality's social, cultural, and territorial identity. With this decision, Playa del Carmen leaves behind the practice of imposing partisan colors on public infrastructure and consolidates a permanent symbol of its own for the city.
A New Civic Identity
According to the initiative supported by all members of the City Council, gathered in the Salón Leona Vicario of the new City Hall, the application of the color will be mandatory on all municipal urban infrastructure for public use. This includes parks, sports units, and recreational and cultural facilities.
The approved color cannot be modified or substituted, except by a justified agreement approved by at least two-thirds of the City Council. In no case will colors that have a direct or indirect relationship with political parties be permitted.
Oversight and compliance of this measure will be the responsibility of the Secretariats of Infrastructure and Public Works and of Municipal Public Services. Furthermore, the Directorate of Institutional Image will be responsible for developing a technical manual.
The implementation of the "Arena Playa" color will be progressive, in accordance with budgetary availability and through coordinated planning between municipal departments.
Additional Council Approvals
In another item on the agenda, the City Council approved the Temporary Processing Program for the Construction of Garages, Commercial Spaces, and Minor Walls, with the objective of facilitating these procedures. Its validity will be from September 1, 2025, to September 29, 2027.
The council also authorized, as an incentive, a transitional charging scheme for the Environmental Sanitation Right for the 2025 fiscal year, which will be calculated based the daily value of the current UMA (Unit of Measurement and Update).
In administrative matters, the definitive write-off of various movable assets from the municipal patrimony was approved, in accordance with financial statements and inventories.
Finally, the reform of various articles of the Organic Regulations of the Municipal Public Administration and the Internal Regulations of the City Council was approved. This update changes the official denomination of the municipality from "Solidaridad" to "Municipio de Playa del Carmen" (Municipality of Playa del Carmen), in congruence with the recent legal reform.
With these actions, the Municipal Government reaffirms its commitment to identity, administrative efficiency, and the well-being of the residents of Playa del Carmen.
