Playa del Carmen, Mexico — Playa del Carmen has solidified its position as the safest municipality in Quintana Roo, according to Mayor Estefanía Mercado. The statement was made during the Travel Mart 2025 event being held in Cancún. She emphasized that an unprecedented effort has involved historic levels of investment in equipment and technology to ensure the safety and protection of both residents and the thousands of tourists who visit the destination.

"In the case of Playa del Carmen, we are doing very well. Playa del Carmen continues to position itself; we are the safest municipality in all of Quintana Roo. This is no coincidence; we made a historic investment, we have almost 500 patrol vehicles. Imagine the amount of equipment we have, and that also allows us to continue recovering and building more trust with those who visit us, but also with those who live there," Estefanía Mercado detailed in an interview.

New Security Archway

The mayor highlighted, in particular, the new city access archway, inaugurated just days ago alongside Governor Mara Lezama, describing it as a very important project.

"This is a security matter. With the facial recognition system and license plate reader, we will know who enters and who leaves Playa del Carmen. This places us at the forefront and reinforces the confidence of visitors, residents, and investors," she stated.

She underscored that thanks to these strategies, investments are also being attracted, as the first thing businesspeople ask is whether the location where they will put their money is safe.

"When it comes to investing, what is the first thing you ask? If the place is safe or not safe. Therefore, for us, security is the fundamental basis for our destination to be very successful touristically," pointed out the mayor of Playa del Carmen.

High Visitor Expectations for Janal Pixán

The municipal president also said that they expect significant visitor numbers in the coming days for the Janal Pixán, or Day of the Dead, celebrations, as there are very attractive events from both private companies and those organized by the City Council she leads.

"The destination has the best events in all of Quintana Roo. Right now, Janal Pixán is coming, and we have high expectations. We invite you to visit us for this incredible experience. We have Grupo Xcaret making its efforts with the Festival of Life and Death, which is beautiful and internationally recognized, but outside you can also find wonderful things. We have a quite interesting schedule and an expectation of 60 to 70 percent visitors," expressed Estefanía Mercado.

Potential for a Major Events Arena

She concluded by saying that there are already discussions about the possibility of building an arena for mass events in Playa del Carmen. There are interested companies, and all options, as well as potential locations, are being analyzed.
