The evaluation of the viability of constructing industrial warehouses adjacent to the Calica reserve has resumed after being suspended twice due to lack of information regarding potential impacts on a high-traffic jaguar corridor zone.

The project is promoted by the Zacatecas-based company Global Construmining & Energy Projects, which seeks to build warehouses in what is envisioned to be the influence zone of the recently decreed Felipe Carrillo Puerto Flora and Fauna Conservation Area, which definitively halted the extraction of stone material from Calica.

In the latest review of federal permit management before the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat) for the project identified with key 23/MA-0176/06/25, it is noted that the evaluation has resumed, nearly six months after requesting the permit for jungle clearing south of Playa del Carmen.

According to data obtained through the Semarnat Ecological Gazette, the project was suspended for lack of information on August 5 and subsequently on October 24. After this lack of information was remedied, the suspension was lifted. With this, it entered evaluation again.

The promoting company seeks in the short term the construction of industrial platforms for storing construction materials south of this city, according to the technical justification study for changing land use on forested lands.

However, it does not indicate the existence of nearby protected natural areas that imply a risk; although located less than three kilometers away is the recently created Felipe Carrillo Puerto Flora and Fauna Conservation Area, of federal jurisdiction, which includes the approximately two thousand hectares owned by the transnational Calica, where for years stone material was extracted using explosive methods.

Additionally, Raúl Padilla Borja, a naturalist specializing in wildlife, has documented the constant passage of jaguars and other species through the area. With the year-end recess, it is expected that starting in 2026 Semarnat will issue the resolution on its viability or denial of the permit.
