Cancun, Mexico — The heavy rains recorded in Cancun not only generate puddles and traffic complications but also the frequent loss of vehicle license plates, a situation that has become common during the current season.
The Director of Transit for Benito Juárez, Ezequiel Segovia Góngora, reported that from last year to the present, the department has accumulated approximately 350 lost license plates, many of which have not been claimed by their owners.
According to the official, with each day of rain, water currents often detach the license plates from cars, which are subsequently recovered by Transit officers or by citizens who turn them in to the department.
"Unfortunately, the accumulation of water moves the plates from where they are placed. The majority of these plates are found by public services personnel and firefighters, and they concentrate them at the transit department. We post them on social media, on the municipal website, and we are waiting for citizens to come with their vehicle registration and identification so we can hand them over immediately," he stated.
He elaborated that in cases where the plates are not recovered, affected drivers must file a report for loss with the State Attorney General's Office, an indispensable procedure to obtain a new set of plates from the Secretariat of Finance and Planning (Sefiplan).
Segovia Góngora urged motorists to check the condition and fastening of their license plates, especially during periods of intense rain, to avoid fines and administrative delays.
On another matter, the official announced that they remain attentive with operations to assist the population in cases of significant puddling on the avenues, either to direct traffic or to implement the temporary closure of roadways. This is done with the goal of guaranteeing safe mobility during these seasonal rains.
Finally, he said that on average per day during the rains, only between 3 to 5 vehicles have been recorded as needing assistance, but that fortunately, the citizenry is increasingly more conscious about where to drive in cases of puddling.
