Mexico City — Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced that her administration will invest 350 billion pesos in education infrastructure by the end of her six-year term, emphasizing that public education remains central to her government’s “Fourth Transformation” agenda.
Sheinbaum revealed that from 2019 to 2026, her administration has already allocated 341.8 billion pesos to the education sector, surpassing the 304.9 billion pesos invested during the 18-year “neoliberal era” that preceded her government.
“In this six-year term, we will invest 350 billion pesos in school improvements and new schools from basic education through higher education,” Sheinbaum said during her morning press conference. “Look at the difference: in seven years, we’re investing more than what was invested in 18 years. We’re convinced that education is a right and that children must attend schools in good condition, with proper maintenance or new facilities. This is truly the essence of the Fourth Transformation, with public education at its center.”
The president noted that the infrastructure investment comes in addition to 160 billion pesos allocated for student scholarships, teacher salary increases, creation of more teaching positions, expansion of high school and university programs, and the National High School initiative.
Program Breakdown
Education Secretary Mario Delgado Carrillo explained that of the 350 billion pesos to be invested throughout the six-year term, 113.7 billion pesos will be allocated this year. He added that 45% of the total investment will go to the “La Escuela es Nuestra” (The School is Ours) program.
The resources will also support the goal of creating 200,000 new student places. Delgado Carrillo said the government will invest over 13 billion pesos for more than 500 high school education initiatives in 2026, compared to 88 initiatives in 2025. Additionally, the Rosario Castellanos University will receive 1.2 billion pesos in 2026 for expansion in 11 states.

López Ruiz announced that card distribution will begin between April and May, with corresponding payments made in May.
Since its creation in 2019 by former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, the program has provided 440,588 supports to 187,092 schools nationwide.
Delgado Carrillo also announced that middle school students living in the Mexico City metropolitan area have until April 17 to register for the “Mi derecho, mi lugar” (My Right, My Place) program through the website miderechomilugar.gob.mx.
