Cancún, Quintana Roo — Mexico’s environment ministry has opened a public consultation for a new 15.4-kilometer bypass in Cancún designed to improve traffic flow between the city’s international airport and the upcoming Maya Train cargo station.

The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat), through its General Directorate of Environmental Impact and Risk, announced the consultation process for the “Cancún South Bypass” project. The initiative is promoted by Tren Maya S.A. de C.V., a company involved in the Maya Train infrastructure project.

The estimated investment for the bypass construction exceeds 3 billion pesos (approximately $150 million). The project will require the Mexican Armed Forces to conduct necessary archaeological salvage studies and work along the route.

Semarnat stated it “determined to begin the public consultation process regarding the project called ‘Cancún South Bypass,’ which will be located in the municipality of Benito Juárez.”

The bypass is described as a strategic infrastructure project for Cancún, with the primary objective of improving road connectivity and optimizing regional mobility. It will function as an extension of Huayacán Avenue, directly linking Federal Highway 180 (the Cancún-Airport branch) with Federal Highway 307 (Cancún-Playa del Carmen) and the new Multimodal Cargo Railway Station.

The public consultation will remain open for one month, starting Monday, April 6 and concluding Monday, May 4, 2026.

“To make available to the public the environmental impact statement for the project during the period from April 6 to May 4, 2026, so that any interested party may propose the establishment of additional prevention and mitigation measures, as well as observations they consider pertinent,” detailed the announcement published by Semarnat.

To incorporate observations from interested parties into the official record, submissions must be made through the electronic link: https://www.semarnat.gob.mx/gobmx/transparencia/consultas.html; through Semarnat’s office in Quintana Roo; or by mail to Avenida Ejército Nacional number 223, Colonia Anáhuac, Alcaldía Miguel Hidalgo, postal code 11320, Mexico City.
