Mexico’s Education Ministry Names Nadia López as New Director of Educational Materials

Mexico City — Mexico’s Education Ministry has appointed Nadia López García as the new director general of educational materials, replacing Marx Arriaga in a key role overseeing textbooks and learning resources for the country’s public schools.

Education Secretary Mario Delgado announced the appointment, highlighting López’s academic and cultural background as the ministry works to consolidate content for the New Mexican School, an educational model emphasizing humanist, community-based, and gender-perspective approaches.

Academic Profile and Intercultural Focus

The ministry said López’s experience in designing pedagogical materials, teacher training, and reading promotion will be crucial for strengthening national educational content. Officials emphasized that her background will help enhance textbooks and teaching resources based on principles of inclusion, interculturality, and equity aligned with the New Mexican School model. The goal is to develop materials that respond to Mexico’s cultural and linguistic diversity.

Who Is Nadia López García?

López holds a degree in pedagogy from the National Autonomous University of Mexico, with specializations in educational policy, educational communication, intercultural education, and didactic materials development. A native of Oaxaca and a Mixtec language speaker, she has extensive experience in academic, cultural, and literary fields both in Mexico and abroad.

She has authored eleven books, with her works translated into multiple languages including English, French, Greek, Arabic, Catalan, Hindi, Bengali, Italian, German, and Chinese.

The Education Ministry stated in a social media announcement: “Nadia López García, pedagogue, indigenous poet, and activist for educational and cultural rights, is named new head of the General Directorate of Educational Materials.”

Awards and Career

Throughout her career, López has received numerous awards including the National Youth Award, the Mesoamerican Poetry Prize Luis Cardoza y Aragón, the Cenzontle Prize for Literary Creation in Indigenous Languages, the Mexico City Youth Award, and the CaSa Prize for Children’s Literature. She also received honorable mention in the Antonio García Cubas Prize in the children’s book category.

With this appointment, the Education Ministry aims to continue strengthening educational materials and consolidating the country’s current pedagogical model.
