Machete Attack Attempt in Playa del Carmen

Scene from the machete attack incident in Playa del Carmen

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — A violent scene alarmed residents walking through the streets of the Centro neighborhood after a man attempted to attack his partner with a machete in Playa del Carmen, allegedly inside their own home. The incident occurred around 10:00 p.m. at the intersection of Avenida 35 and Calle 2, where neighbors heard the desperate screams of a woman.

According to testimonies, the victim was being pursued by a man carrying a machete who had apparently already assaulted her moments before, generating fear among those in the area.

911 Call Mobilizes Police

Given the seriousness of the situation, citizens made a report to the emergency number 911. Minutes later, a unit from the Municipal Citizen Security Secretariat arrived at the scene to verify the facts.

Upon noticing the police presence, the alleged aggressor re-entered the home, while the woman refused to open the access gate, preventing officers from directly intervening to secure the subject.

Specialized GEAVIG Group Intervenes

Due to the possible domestic violence situation, the presence of the Specialized Group for Attention to Domestic and Gender Violence (GEAVIG) was requested. The officers attempted to dialogue with the woman to provide support and persuade her to allow entry; however, the victim maintained her stance of not opening the door.

This refusal complicated the authorities’ actions, who prioritized avoiding a confrontation that could put the woman at greater risk.

Finally, the officers made recommendations to the woman to file the corresponding complaint and offered her psychological and legal accompaniment. The authorities reiterated the importance of reporting any act of violence to prevent tragedies.
