Isla Mujeres — The municipal government of Isla Mujeres, led by Mayor Atenea Gómez Ricalde, carried out a special cleanup initiative along the Caribbean Sea beach near La Guadalupana neighborhood. The effort is part of broader environmental conservation measures and sargassum management strategies.

Commitment to Environmental Preservation

Mayor Gómez Ricalde reaffirmed her administration’s dedication to protecting the municipality’s natural resources, emphasizing that such initiatives align with her environmental policies aimed at fostering a cleaner, safer, and more organized community.

She also expressed gratitude to Oscar Rebora Aguilera, Director of Ecology and Environment (SEMA), for participating in the cleanup, which resulted in the collection of approximately 18 tons of sargassum.

"Cleaning our beaches is not a one-day task—it is a shared responsibility that requires persistence, love for Isla Mujeres, and a willingness to drive change. We will continue working together to protect our island and the species that call it home," stated the mayor.

Protecting Marine Wildlife

The cleanup highlighted the importance of maintaining pristine beaches, particularly as they serve as nesting grounds for sea turtles, a protected species that returns annually to the area to complete its life cycle.

The event demonstrated coordinated efforts between municipal departments and the Federal Maritime-Terrestrial Zone (ZOFEMAT) teams, who conduct daily beach maintenance and sargassum removal. Employees from various municipal offices collaborated to remove accumulated debris and seaweed, safeguarding both the ecosystem and public health for beachgoers.
