Isla Mujeres, Mexico — The Municipal Government of Isla Mujeres, led by Mayor Atenea Gómez Ricalde, has received the Playa Platino (Platinum Beach) certification for Playa Norte and Playa Centro for the third consecutive year. The certification was granted by the Instituto Mexicano de Normalización y Certificación A.C. (IMNC).

The awards were presented during the Fifth Encounter of Sustainable Beaches, an event that brought together authorities and coastal conservation specialists from across the country. The general director of the IMNC, Viviana Fernández Camargo, was responsible for presenting the distinctions to the municipal president, recognizing the municipality's constant effort to maintain high standards of cleanliness, sustainability, and responsible management of natural resources.

With these certifications, Isla Mujeres reaffirms its position as a national and international reference in environmental quality and coastal care, consolidating its leadership as one of the cleanest and most sustainable tourist destinations in Mexico.

Commitment and Community Work

During the ceremony, Atenea Gómez emphasized that the achievement is the result of teamwork and the commitment of the workers of the Zona Federal Marítimo Terrestre (ZOFEMAT), who perform daily tasks of cleaning, maintenance, and conservation.

“Thanks to the effort of our people, today our beaches shine once again and position themselves among the best in the world. This recognition is for all the islanders who care for their environment with love,” expressed the mayor.

She added that her administration is working to build a municipality where cleanliness, order, and security are part of the island's identity.

“These certifications are proof that when we work with discipline, consistency, and love for our land, the results are visible and felt,” she underscored.

Endorsement of Environmental Quality

The Playa Platino certification adds to the two international Blue Flag awards recently granted to Playa Norte and Playa Centro for the 2025-2026 season, which reaffirms the Municipal Government's commitment to environmental preservation, tourist quality, and the care of natural resources.

With this, Isla Mujeres continues to consolidate its leadership as a model destination for coastal sustainability and responsible tourism in Quintana Roo and Mexico.
