Isla Mujeres, Mexico — In a ceremony marking the Anniversary of the Creation of the Mexican Navy, the municipal president of Isla Mujeres, Atenea Gómez Ricalde, presided over the commemorative event alongside Admiral Guadalupe Juan José Bernal Méndez, commander of the Fifth Naval Region. The ceremony was held in the municipal square of the town.
During the event, which commemorates the 204th anniversary of the birth of the Mexican Navy, the raising and unveiling of flags took place, along with the reading of the historical overview of the Mexican Navy. This institution has safeguarded national sovereignty and protected the country's maritime interests for over two centuries.
In her address, Mayor Atenea Gómez Ricalde highlighted the fundamental role the Mexican Navy plays in the daily life of the municipality, describing it as an essential part of the island's development, security, and identity.
"In Isla Mujeres, the service of the Mexican Navy acquires a profound meaning because we are a people of the sea. Our economy, our traditions, and our affections are intertwined with it. Here, the Fifth Naval Region accompanies the daily life of our families: it protects our fishermen, cares for sailors and visitors, strengthens preparation for hurricanes, and provides peace of mind to the entire community. The naval presence is part of the island's social fabric and the pride we feel for our home," she commented.
Furthermore, she acknowledged the closeness and commitment of the sailors serving in the Fifth Naval Region, who, with their discipline and dedication, strengthen the security and well-being of Isla Mujeres.
"For this reason, we express pride in being the headquarters of the Fifth Naval Region and gratitude for every woman and every man of the sea who serves in this institution. Every mission they fulfill, every watch they stand, and every act of service they perform reflects loyalty and a profound love for Mexico," she emphasized.
With this commemorative act, the Municipal Government reaffirmed its recognition and respect for the Mexican Navy, an institution that is part of the history, identity, and heart of Isla Mujeres.
