12-Year-Old Father in Quintana Roo Case

Cancún — A 12-year-old adolescent from the municipality of Othón P. Blanco, Quintana Roo, was officially registered as a father during 2024, placing him among documented cases of minors in this situation across the country, according to data from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi).

The mother of the newborn was 38 years old in 2024, representing an age difference of 26 years. This case marks the second widest age gap among the 30 instances of child paternity reported nationally.

The first place is occupied by Puebla, where another 12-year-old minor is listed as the father of a baby with a 40-year-old woman, marking a 28-year age difference. The third site is Silao de la Victoria, Guanajuato, with a similar case involving a 12-year-old boy and a 37-year-old mother.

The top-ten list also includes Villa Victoria, State of Mexico, with another 12-year-old minor and a 33-year-old partner. Following in the order is a boy from Monterrey, Nuevo León, of the same age with a 31-year-old partner.

On the opposite side, births involving 12-year-old mothers were also reported in Guerrero and the State of Mexico, some with partners as young as 13. This statistic also includes three 12-year-old fathers who had a child with 13-year-old girls from Huajuapan de León, Oaxaca; Piedras Negras, Coahuila; and Juárez, Chihuahua.

Some child protection organizations have pointed out that this data, although statistical, reveals the urgent need to strengthen mechanisms for reporting and institutional vigilance, especially in rural areas and those with high social vulnerability.

It is worth mentioning that Quintana Roo, which in other years has been noted for high rates of adolescent pregnancy, now also appears on the country's list of child paternities.
