Holbox, Quintana Roo — The Holbox Carnival celebrated its 20th anniversary this weekend with a vibrant parade and performances that drew residents and tourists alike. The event, a long-standing tradition on the Caribbean island, featured dancers, musicians, and elaborate costumes parading from the pier to the central park.

The carnival, known for blending local traditions with contemporary elements, included music ranging from Caribbean rhythms to salsa and cumbia. Mayor Josué Nivardo Mena Villanueva praised the organizers, performers, and volunteers, saying, “Congratulations to the organizers, kings, student groups, and all the anonymous heroes who make this possible, such as the musicians, staff, makeup artists, stylists, seamstresses, choreographers, dancers, and all the carnival participants of our island.”

He added, “The carnival on Holbox Island is an open invitation to joy. In a society that often feels divided, this celebration is a reminder that culture and festivity can unite us all. Here, from the casual visitor to the lifelong resident, the carnival offers moments of pure happiness and human connection.”

The festivities culminated with a large dance event featuring a performance by the group “Grupo Kalea,” which entertained thousands of people at the Acoustic Shell plaza. The carnival is noted for its inclusivity, bringing together locals, expatriates, and international visitors in a celebration of the island’s cultural heritage.
