Cozumel, MX — The Cozumel Parks and Museums Foundation (FPMC), through its Directorate of Pedagogy and Social Assistance (PAS) and the Parque Urbano Corazón, has provided members of the Association of Professional Guides of Quintana Roo A.C. with the workshop “Connection with the Ecosystem: Mycotourism in Cozumel.” The initiative aims to promote a connection with nature and culture through knowledge of the fungi that inhabit the island.

Training for Tourist Guides in Ecotourism

During the talk titled “The Fungi of Cozumel: A World to Discover,” participants engaged with topics such as the main characteristics of fungal species, their primary groups, and their cultural, ecological, and medical importance, as well as their contribution to maintaining ecosystems.

Furthermore, mycotourism was presented as an alternative for diversifying the destination’s tourist offerings through experiences that combine environmental education and sustainability.

Following the theoretical session, an exhibition of fungal specimens found in the Parque Urbano Corazón was held. The objective was for the tourism guides to learn how to recognize them in the field and share this knowledge with tourists of all ages, thereby fostering environmental education and an appreciation for local biodiversity.

Alignment with State Initiatives

The FPMC’s General Director, Juanita Alonso Marrufo, emphasized that this type of initiative aligns with the actions promoted by Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa through the New Agreement for the Well-being and Development of Quintana Roo. This agreement promotes ecotourism as a tool for the knowledge and conservation of the environment, respect for natural resources, and the economic development of communities.

Biologist Adrián Andrés Tun Cano underscored that mycotourism allows for the responsible enjoyment of nature and fosters environmental awareness among both visitors and local residents, strengthening the collective commitment to protect Cozumel’s natural and cultural heritage.
