Puerto Morelos Fishing Sector Struggles with Challenges

Puerto Morelos, Quintana Roo — The fishing activity in Puerto Morelos is going through a complicated period, marked by structural deficiencies, operational limitations, and growing concern among those who depend on the sea for their livelihood. Local fishermen warn that current conditions hinder their daily work and threaten the economic stability of numerous families.

In recent days, members of the sector have expressed their dissatisfaction with the lack of direct support, the deterioration of port facilities, and restrictions on using spaces that have traditionally been part of their activity, such as the pier. They point out that these problems directly impact the productivity and safety of their workdays.

Fishing, considered one of the most deeply rooted practices in Puerto Morelos, also faces challenges related to the natural environment. Sea workers alert about the absence of comprehensive actions for waste management and the increase in activities that affect marine ecosystems, a situation that has caused progressive deterioration of fishing areas.

To this is added concern about constructions near sensitive natural areas, such as mangroves, which, they assure, increase environmental risk and compromise the sustainability of fishing in the long term.

During certain key seasons, such as the arrival of specific species, fishermen have also pointed out limitations that affect traditional practices, reducing their opportunities for utilization without clear alternatives to maintain the activity.

The panorama reflects a widespread feeling within the fishing sector: the urgent need for better conditions, respect for their historical work, and actions that allow preserving an activity that has given identity and sustenance to Puerto Morelos for generations.
