Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Facing increasing vulnerability to hydrometeorological events, local fishermen in Playa del Carmen have formally requested the installation of a floating dock along the municipality’s coastline as an urgent measure to safeguard their vessels.

Gamaliel Ek, director of the organization Pescando en el Caribe (Fishing in the Caribbean), emphasized that a floating structure would provide a practical and efficient solution. Unlike fixed docks, which require extensive permits and resources, a floating dock can be easily assembled and disassembled as needed.

Currently, fishermen must rely on private cranes to remove their boats from the water ahead of severe weather alerts due to the lack of local infrastructure. The nearest marinas are located in Puerto Aventuras and Puerto Morelos, significantly increasing operational costs and jeopardizing a critical sector of the regional economy.

Additional Proposals for Fishermen’s Safety

Ek also proposed the construction of a dedicated ramp exclusively for commercial and recreational fishermen to ensure swift and secure access during emergencies. While Coco Beach was previously considered as a potential site, Ek suggested reevaluating other coastal areas to identify the most suitable location.

The project has been labeled as both urgent and a priority, as its implementation would enhance operational safety for the fishing community and ensure the continuity of their livelihoods in Playa del Carmen.
