Riviera Maya, Quintana Roo — The Sereno resort project planned for the Xpu-Ha area has been canceled after its developers withdrew it from environmental review with Mexico’s federal environmental agency.

The project was submitted in February 2025 to the Secretariat of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat) for environmental impact assessment. During the review process, federal authorities repeatedly requested additional information, causing significant delays.

After months without definitive progress, the developers formally withdrew the application in early 2026, canceling the project before Semarnat could issue a final decision. The agency has closed the case file, eliminating any immediate possibility of the tourist-residential complex being built in one of Quintana Roo’s most environmentally sensitive coastal areas.

This case joins other regional projects that have faced obstacles or been halted due to environmental concerns, as authorities have strengthened review processes for developments affecting ecosystems like jungles, mangroves, and coastal zones.
