Foundation removes 930 kg of waste from Caribbean coast

Eco-Bahía Foundation volunteers cleaning waste from Mexican Caribbean coastline

Quintana Roo, Mexico — The Eco-Bahía Foundation concluded its 2025 cycle with significant results in protecting the coastal ecosystem. Through its Sak Program, the organization intercepted 930.51 kilograms of solid waste before it reached the sea floor, cleaning more than three kilometers of coastline in areas of high biological importance.

Combating Microplastics and Lethal Threats

The annual report highlights efforts to combat invisible threats. During 12 strategic sessions, a team of 237 volunteers extracted 4,170 nurdles (industrial microplastics). These particles represent a critical risk as marine fauna mistakes them for food, introducing toxins into the state’s food chain.

The cleanup and rescue operations concentrated on key points such as Playa Aventuras DIF and the Xcacel-Xcacelito Sea Turtle Sanctuary, covering a total extension of 3.32 kilometers.

Applied Science and Global Projection

Luis Verdín Huerta, manager of the Eco-Bahía Foundation in Mexico, emphasized that the Sak Program functions as a tool of applied science: “Each removed waste generates data that allows us to understand and combat pollution from its origin,” he stated.

The relevance of these actions has transcended borders. The detailed analysis of 329.95 kg of recovered waste was integrated into Ocean Conservancy’s database. This information exchange allows findings from the coasts of Quintana Roo to contribute to global monitoring of ocean health, positioning the region as a reference in regenerative tourism.

With these achievements, the Foundation reaffirms that technical management and collective action are fundamental to guaranteeing the viability of the Caribbean’s natural capital against the pressure of human activity and climate change.
