Drunk Drivers Cause Crash in Cancún, Two Injured and Suspects Arrested

A white Nissan Versa with severe front-end damage after a collision in Cancún

Cancún, Quintana Roo — Two intoxicated drivers caused a serious collision in Cancún on Monday night, leaving two people injured and leading to the arrest of the suspects.

The crash occurred around 9:40 p.m. on Centenario Avenue at the intersection with Payo Obispo in Supermanzana 227. A red Chevrolet Aveo, driven at high speed by a man allegedly under the influence of alcohol with a similarly intoxicated passenger, ran a stop sign and struck a white Nissan Versa.

The impact was severe enough to spin the Versa across the median into oncoming traffic. The driver of the Aveo lost control and ended up on the sidewalk.

Residents rushed to help the occupants of both vehicles and called emergency services. Paramedics from the Ángeles Verdes company, firefighters, and traffic police officers responded to the scene.

The two occupants of the Nissan Versa received medical attention for various injuries. The driver and passenger of the Aveo were given first aid but were not seriously hurt.

Authorities confirmed both men from the Aveo showed signs of alcohol intoxication. They were taken to the Municipal Secretariat of Citizen Security and Transit for medical certification and breathalyzer tests before being handed over to the State Prosecutor’s Office to determine their legal status.

The vehicles involved were towed to an impound lot by the Rivera company as the investigation into the crash continues.
