Cozumel, Quintana Roo — The island of Cozumel is preparing to sign a tourism promotion agreement with the municipality of Guadalupe, Nuevo León, aiming to capitalize on visitor traffic expected during the upcoming FIFA World Cup.
Cozumel Mayor José Luis Chacón Méndez announced the partnership, explaining that it will allow Cozumel to be promoted in Guadalupe while giving the Nuevo León city visibility on the island.
“Why Guadalupe? Because that’s where one of the three World Cup stadiums is located, and it benefits us to have our beautiful municipality promoted in that internationally prominent setting,” Chacón said.
The mayor noted that during Cozumel’s carnival, a promotion campaign at Mexico City International Airport ran for over a month and generated positive impact on hotel occupancy, which reached 100 percent. He emphasized the importance of leveraging air connectivity with Monterrey, which will facilitate visitor arrivals from northern Mexico during the World Cup.
Chacón also revealed that through the Tourism Department, the municipality has requested installation of a FanFest on the island — a space with giant screens to broadcast soccer matches.
“We want tourists with soccer enthusiasm to be able to enjoy the games in parks, experience the atmosphere, and catch that energy that soccer generates,” he said.
Through these and other actions, officials aim to position Cozumel not just as a sun-and-beach destination but also as a place with cultural and sports offerings that attract both national and international visitors.
