Cozumel, Mexico — The expansion of the Cozumel International Airport is advancing steadily after the Southeast Airport Group (ASUR) obtained an environmental permit from the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT). This authorization was an indispensable requirement to proceed with the construction due to the project's proximity to the coastal ecosystem.
Initially projected with an investment of just over 250 million pesos, the project has seen a significant budget increase, now reaching 340 million pesos. Pablo Esteban Arjona Ortiz, the airport administrator, previously explained that the rise in cost is primarily due to the increased price of materials and the logistical costs associated with transporting them to the island.
The expansion project includes the enlargement of the terminal building and parking areas, incorporating a zone exclusive for concessionary transport. This addition is intended to free up spaces currently occupied by rental car companies and public access vehicles. Through this reorganization, the project aims to improve the user experience without restricting free access to the main building.
Furthermore, an alternate building will be constructed to the east of the current terminal, destined to expand waiting and arrival areas. This will increase the airport's operational capacity to over 1.2 million annual passengers, representing a 40 percent growth from its current capacity of 711,000.
In terms of aeronautical infrastructure, two additional positions for arriving aircraft will be added, increasing the total from six to eight spaces. As part of the comprehensive modernization, two state-of-the-art fire trucks, brought from the United States, have also been incorporated to reinforce safety in case of fires.
With these actions, ASUR reaffirms its commitment to developing a modern, efficient, and secure terminal for Cozumel.
