Cozumel, Mexico — Local authorities and organizers are finalizing details regarding security, traffic, and logistics to guarantee a successful GFNY Cozumel cycling event, which is expected to generate economic benefits for the community.
With just over a month until the Gran Fondo New York Cozumel (GFNY) takes place, the island has declared itself ready for the competition. Officials are working to finalize plans to receive at least three thousand competitors, a figure comparable to the 2024 participant count of 2,800 cyclists. A significant economic boost for the local tourism sector is anticipated.
Finalizing Logistics for a Major Event
Elías Farah Ceh, the Municipal Subdirector of Tourism, recently met with GFNY Cozumel organizers to coordinate the event's execution. The meeting included Shaun Gad, the event's Chief Executive Officer, and Pablo Aguilar Torres, the local representative for the Quintana Roo Tourism Promotion Council (CPTQ).
Farah Ceh stated that the meeting served to establish the current level of progress for the cycling competition, which is scheduled for November 16. He indicated that the safety of cyclists on the island circuit has been a primary focus, alongside a road inspection to verify conditions. Necessary repairs and adjustments will be made to ensure the route is in optimal condition for the race.
A Growing Event with Economic Impact
The GFNY event has been held in Cozumel since 2014, when it attracted approximately one thousand participants. By 2024, that number had grown to 2,800 competitors. This year, organizers hope to surpass three thousand participants, which, when including their companions and service personnel, is projected to bring an important influx of tourism revenue to the destination and further promote sports tourism.
During the coordination meeting, GFNY Cozumel executives presented their operational manual. This document contains comprehensive information regarding the routes for both the full 154-kilometer circuit and the 77-kilometer half-distance course for those registered in that category.
Assistance points, support vehicle routes along the course, and logistics for road closures and traffic control in the urban area were all established. These measures are aimed at ensuring an event free of setbacks. Informational materials, including a route map and designated crossing points, will also be distributed to the community.
In summary, the island has been declared ready for this event, with expectations set on achieving greater economic benefits from sports-related events.
