Cancún, Quintana Roo — The Secretariat of Infrastructure, Communications, and Transportation (SICT) announced the completion of construction work in the mangrove zone of the Nichupté vehicular bridge, considered the most significant infrastructure project in Benito Juárez.
The specialized team, known as Top Down, finalized its assigned tasks in this section and will be dismantled within two weeks before being relocated to a storage yard owned by the company ICA.
Innovative Technology Minimizes Environmental Impact
The system employed allowed for aerial foundation work with minimal interference to the natural surroundings. According to the SICT, this marks the first time this technology has been used in Mexico, the second in Latin America, and the first globally with pile drilling specifically designed to reduce impact on mangroves.
The Nichupté Bridge will span a total of 11.2 kilometers over the lagoon system, connecting Luis Donaldo Colosio and Kukulcán boulevards. It will feature three lanes: one in each direction and a reversible lane, which will operate based on traffic flow between downtown Cancún and the hotel zone.
Project Progress and Environmental Compliance
Currently, the project is 85% complete. The SICT reiterated that the construction adheres to environmental criteria focused on protecting Quintana Roo’s coastal ecosystems.
