Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Civil Protection officials in Playa del Carmen ordered the immediate closure of the Chedraui Centro supermarket on Thursday afternoon after inspectors identified multiple safety hazards, including electrical failures and improperly stored merchandise that posed risks to employees and customers.

Inspection Reveals Critical Safety Failures

At approximately 5:00 p.m., personnel from the Secretariat of Civil Protection, Firefighters, and Risk Prevention arrived at the Chedraui location on Boulevard 3 Sur. According to information obtained by Diario Cambio 22, inspectors documented numerous violations, including exposed wiring, corroded connectors, and improperly arranged product displays that obstructed safe passage.

Merchandise was found stacked in hazardous locations, with unstable displays that could collapse and cause injuries. Electrical hazards, such as frayed cables and outdated connections, were also flagged as immediate threats.

Immediate Closure and Prior Incidents

Authorities placed official closure seals on the premises and barred entry to the public, notifying store management of the suspension. This marks the second such action against a Chedraui location in Playa del Carmen within two weeks. On June 18, Civil Protection shut down the Chedraui store in Plaza Las Américas for similar safety violations.

No timeline was provided for the store’s reopening, pending corrective measures.
