Chetumal, Quintana Roo — The Chetumal Citizens' Council (CCC) has formally requested the State Executive Power provide all information related to actions undertaken and planned regarding the defense of Quintana Roo's territorial boundaries with the states of Campeche and Yucatán.
The president of the CCC, Georgina Marzuca, explained that this petition seeks to bring a process that has remained without visible progress, despite its historical and juridical importance for the state, out of a "legal limbo." She emphasized that the border controversy, which has lasted for decades without a definitive resolution, requires a clear and public stance from the State Government.
"We are concerned that this matter remains stalled while the current administration's timeline advances. Governor Mara Lezama has only two years of her term remaining, and it is necessary to know what has been done and what will be done before her mandate concludes," stated Marzuca.
The Chetumal Citizens' Council highlighted that the lack of information generates uncertainty among the population, particularly in communities near the disputed areas, where the territorial indefinition affects planning, public investment, and the provision of services.
Furthermore, the civil organization considered it indispensable for the state Executive, through the Legal Counsellor's Office and the Secretary of Government, to deliver a detailed report on the current status of the litigation, the management carried out before the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN), and the legal strategies that will be implemented to guarantee the territorial integrity of Quintana Roo.
"This is not a political issue, but one of sovereignty and legal certainty for the people of Quintana Roo. We cannot allow a lack of follow-up to leave our state at a disadvantage," emphasized the president of the CCC.
She commented that, given the lack of information from the legal counsellor's office of the executive power, which is handling the case before the SCJN, and from the legislative power despite having a special commission to attend to the border conflict, the citizens' council requested to know the current procedural status of the litigation. This includes resolutions, agreements, hearings, and progress registered in the last two years.
Additionally, the council requested information on the legal and political defense strategies adopted by the State Government, in coordination with the Legislative and Judicial powers, to safeguard the historical boundaries of Quintana Roo; the concrete legal actions undertaken before the SCJN, as well as the legal and technical teams advising the defense of the territory.
They also asked to be informed of the forms of citizen participation and social organization that have been promoted to strengthen this common cause, as well as the last public report directed to the people of Quintana Roo on this topic, including its content and date of presentation.
