Cancún Municipal Vaccination Site Administers Over 3,700 Measles Doses in First Week

Cancún, Quintana Roo — A municipal vaccination site in Cancún has administered approximately 3,700 measles vaccine doses during its first week of operation, part of an intensive statewide immunization campaign.

The site, set up in the plaza outside the Municipal Palace, began operations last Monday and saw increasing demand throughout the week, according to Municipal Health Director Héctor González Rodríguez.

On Saturday alone, staff administered 1,021 vaccines, followed by 780 on Sunday, making it one of the busiest days at the location.

“The total number of vaccines administered from Monday through yesterday at 9 p.m. is approximately 3,700,” González Rodríguez reported, noting positive public response to the campaign.

During the week, the site operated from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., but hours were extended to 9 p.m. on weekends due to increased demand. The location was originally planned for Las Palapas Park but was moved to the Municipal Palace for logistical reasons.

Despite coinciding with carnival activities in the city center, authorities said the flow of people was primarily driven by interest in vaccination.

“There was very good attendance. It might have been related to the carnival, but Plaza de la Reforma and the Palace area were actually clear; still, people came,” González Rodríguez explained.

The municipal vaccination sites suspended operations on Monday and Tuesday due to administrative activities related to the carnival but will resume on Wednesday and remain active through the rest of February.

González Rodríguez emphasized that vaccination is free and primarily targeted at adults under 49 and children with incomplete immunization schedules.

“It’s 100 percent free and universal, focusing on the target population,” he said.

In addition to the municipal site, the campaign runs simultaneously at IMSS (Mexican Social Security Institute) regular units, IMSS Bienestar facilities, ISSSTE hospitals, the General Hospital, and urban health centers.

At the IMSS-operated dome in Region 94, approximately 550 doses were administered in a single day last Saturday.

While the campaign focuses on measles, some locations also offer vaccines to complete childhood immunization schedules and seasonal vaccines including influenza, pneumococcal, and COVID-19.

The vaccination intensification occurs amid strengthened epidemiological surveillance aimed at increasing coverage in vulnerable sectors and preventing potential outbreaks.
