Cancún, Quintana Roo — The Mexican Caribbean is expanding beyond its famous beaches with a packed 2026 calendar that includes a NASCAR race, an air show, and cultural events aimed at transforming the region into a major entertainment destination.
Tourism officials and authorities have confirmed an integrated strategy to position Cancún, Tulum, and surrounding areas as one of Mexico’s premier experience hubs, combining high-impact events with promotions targeting both domestic and international visitors.
Spring Equinox and Maya Train Connectivity
The tourism push begins with one of Mexico’s most emblematic events: the spring equinox at Chichén Itzá, which annually draws thousands of visitors to witness the archaeoastronomical phenomenon. To enhance this experience, hotels near the archaeological site are offering special promotions and discounts.
The Maya Train plays a crucial role in this strategy by providing direct access from various stations to Chichén Itzá, improving visitor mobility throughout the region.
Tulum’s Double Feature: Air Show and NASCAR
The most significant media attention will arrive in April 2026 when Tulum hosts two major events simultaneously.
From April 23-26, the Felipe Carrillo Puerto International Airport in Tulum will host an air show expected to become one of the year’s most spectacular events. Running concurrently, the destination will also host a NASCAR Mexico Series race, making Tulum a convergence point for tourism and motorsports.
This combination positions the Mexican Caribbean as a destination offering not just relaxation but also high-level entertainment.
Tourism Packages and Extended Stays
To capitalize on the expected visitor surge, tourism operators have designed packages that include accommodations, event access, and complementary experiences. One notable option is a three-night, four-day package specifically designed for visitors wanting to experience both the air show and NASCAR race.
This strategy aims not only to attract tourists but also to increase their length of stay and spending within the destination.
Maya Train as Mobility Backbone
The Maya Train infrastructure serves as a key element connecting experiences across the region. During major events, the train will provide special transportation services, facilitating access to Tulum, Cancún, and Chichén Itzá while reducing travel times between southeastern Mexico’s tourist destinations.
The clear goal is to transform the region into a comprehensive destination where culture, sports, and entertainment converge. By incorporating events like NASCAR in Tulum alongside international spectacles and cultural phenomena, officials aim to diversify tourism offerings beyond the traditional sun-and-beach model.
