Armed Commandos Kidnap Security Guard Near Oxtankah Archaeological Site in Quintana Roo

Chetumal, Quintana Roo — A security guard was kidnapped by armed commandos early Wednesday morning near the Oxtankah archaeological site in southern Quintana Roo, sparking renewed security concerns in the region.

The incident occurred around 5 a.m. on a property near the abandoned “Calquin” stone quarry, located just off the Quintana Roo Ramal a Oxtankah highway. The area is sparsely populated and approximately a decade removed from active industrial use.

According to anonymous informants, the victim is a 32-year-old man from Cancún who worked as a night watchman and security guard at the residence. Witnesses reported that four men wearing ski masks, black caps, and carrying long guns arrived at the site in a white pickup truck and a medium-sized red vehicle.

The assailants violently seized the guard, forced him into one of the vehicles, and fled in an unknown direction. Residents in the area reported hearing gunfire during the incident, which prompted them to alert authorities.

State police and officers from the State Prosecutor’s Office (FGE) responded to the scene. During their inspection, investigators reportedly found blood stains and a spent shell casing, confirming that shots were fired during the abduction.

The FGE has taken over processing the scene and launched an investigation to locate the victim and identify the perpetrators. Authorities have released few details about the case, maintaining what local reports describe as a tight lid on information.

The kidnapping has generated anxiety among residents of the nearby community of Calderitas, coming just days after the February 13 discovery of the body of Carlos Hernández Gorocica, who had been reported missing on February 11. His remains were found near the irregular settlement of Mártires Antorchistas.
