Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Aguakan, the water utility company for Quintana Roo, has completed the first phase of a major water network modernization project in Playa del Carmen. The work is part of a comprehensive plan launched in September 2025 with an investment exceeding 43 million pesos.
This initial phase focused on Avenida 10 between CTM Avenue and 34th Street North. Crews installed approximately 800 meters of new piping and replaced 33 residential water connections, which will improve service for residents and businesses in the area.
Jorge Rosas, Aguakan’s construction coordinator, said the project addresses the city’s urban growth and has been coordinated with Playa del Carmen’s municipal government to ensure orderly execution with minimal environmental impact.
The work used open-trench methods to remove old pipes and install new water lines with greater control and safety during the replacement process.
The full program calls for installing over 18,000 meters of pipe with diameters ranging from three to 18 inches, plus rehabilitating more than 2,000 residential connections. These improvements are expected to benefit over 14,000 residents in coming years.
The modernization project is structured in three phases:
- The first phase on Avenida 10 between CTM and 34th Street North is now complete
- The second phase will cover interior streets in circuits 1 through 5 between 15th Avenue North and Avenida 10
- The third phase involves work in circuits 6 and 7 from Avenida 10 to Albatros Street, between 38th Street North and CTM Avenue, including areas near Fifth Avenue
To minimize disruptions, Aguakan implemented partial road closures, preventive signage, and alternative routes while maintaining communication with residents through official channels and a citizen service line.
With over three decades of operations in Cancún, Isla Mujeres, Playa del Carmen, and Puerto Morelos, Aguakan says it remains committed to strengthening water infrastructure and ensuring sustainable water use in Quintana Roo amid continued urban growth.
