Two new hotels are set to be built on the island of Holbox, with a total investment of 107 million pesos. The hotels will provide an additional 85 rooms, accommodating nearly 200 more tourists. This will add to the island's existing 169 establishments offering 2,275 rooms, making Holbox the sixth largest provider of accommodation after Cancún, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Costa Mujeres, and Puerto Morelos. The projects, known as "Los Caballos" Hotel and "Mia Holbox", are currently awaiting environmental impact assessment approval from the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources. Both hotels will be situated on the coastline of the Lázaro Cárdenas municipality.

The first project, "Los Caballos" Hotel, will require an investment of 77 million pesos. It will feature 42 rooms within a three-level condominium, located on Pedro Joaquín Coldwell Avenue. The hotel will be able to host 104 guests and will include a restaurant, pools, a terrace, a deckchair area, umbrellas, and a boutique store selling artisanal clothing and souvenirs. The hotel will be built on a 1,285 square meter plot, with the access maintaining its natural sandy state, suitable for golf carts, bicycles, or pedestrians. The construction phase will provide temporary employment for 116 people, and once operational, the hotel will employ a permanent staff of 20.

The second hotel, "Mia Holbox", will be built on a 1,944 square meter plot, with an investment of 27 million pesos. Ten percent of this investment will be allocated to environmental technologies. The hotel will have a capacity of 42 rooms and one suite, accommodating up to 89 guests across three buildings. Additional features include a 107 square meter pool, a dining room, and a commercial area. The hotel will be built in a "U" shape on Costera Damero Avenue, just 20 meters from the Gulf of Mexico. The construction will utilize rustic bricks and stone, local woods, and roofs with wooden structures covered with thatched palapas.

Holbox Island spans 154,000 hectares, with 34 kilometers of white sandy beaches that form part of the Yum Balam Flora and Fauna Protection Area. Tourism is the island's main economic activity, supported by 472 active vacation rentals. The island faces challenges in supplying potable water, which is currently transported via an 11.2-kilometer submarine line from the port of Chiquilá.
