Property crimes in Quintana Roo have surged dramatically, becoming a significant issue for local families. In the first half of the current year alone, 12,146 cases were reported. The Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System reveals that out of the 26,942 incidents recorded from January to June 2024, property crimes made up a large portion. These included theft, with 6,283 cases; dispossession of property, with 3,007 cases; and breach of trust, with 2,096 cases among others.
Crimes against other legal assets came in second place with 5,012 incidents. These included threats (1,780 cases), drug dealing (1,198 cases), unspecified common law crimes (1,004 cases), and falsehood (317 cases).
Crimes against the family were the third most common, with 4,237 cases reported. These included domestic violence (3,558 cases), unspecified family crimes (410 cases), and neglect of family assistance (269 cases).
Crimes against life and physical integrity were in fourth place, with 2,430 cases for injuries, 766 for homicide, 160 for unspecified crimes against life and physical integrity, and four cases each for injuries and abortion.
Comparing these statistics between 2023 and 2024, the incidence of high-impact common-law crimes decreased in 2024. A total of 26,942 crimes were reported in 2024, compared to 27,869 complaints presented to the Attorney General's Office in 2023.
Out of 11 municipalities, seven saw a decrease in crime rates. These included Lázaro Cárdenas (33.6% decrease), Isla Mujeres (12.7% decrease), Othón P. Blanco (8.8% decrease), Benito Juárez (6.3% decrease), Tulum (4.8% decrease), Felipe Carrillo Puerto (4.4% decrease), and Puerto Morelos (2.3% decrease). However, crime rates increased in Bacalar (13.5% increase), Solidaridad (9.1% increase), Cozumel (3.4% increase), and José María Morelos (1.3% increase).
