Chaos in Playa del Carmen: Police Forced to Retreat from Eviction Attempt

On Tuesday afternoon, an attempt by the State Attorney General's Office (FGE) to evict squatters from a site in the Las Torres area of Playa del Carmen ended in chaos. The FGE's Property Crimes Investigation Unit arrived at the site, located behind the bus terminal, around 1:20 pm to carry out the eviction.

However, the situation quickly escalated as the residents armed themselves with sticks and stones and became aggressive. Amidst shouting and threats, it became clear that the residents had no intention of leaving their land without a fight. The hostility of the situation led the officers to decide against risking a violent confrontation. With no other options, they gathered their belongings and retreated from the site.

This is not the first time an eviction attempt in this area has resulted in conflict. The residents of Las Torres have repeatedly demonstrated their unwillingness to leave, and it is evident that the authorities will need to carefully consider their next steps to prevent the situation from spiraling further out of control.
