Tulum, Quintana Roo — In an effort to intensify cleaning operations on the municipality's beaches, the Directorate of the Federal Maritime Terrestrial Zone (Zofemat) of Tulum has announced the incorporation of 45 people into the temporary employment program. These individuals will join the brigades responsible for removing sargassum, according to the head of the area, David Buchanan García.

"This week we are starting with our temporary employment program. There will be 45 people joining the team, which will help us cover much more area and make significantly better progress," he explained.

The official stated that this strategy is being implemented at a key moment, as the accumulation of sargassum on the coasts of Tulum has been particularly intense this year.

The interviewee reported that, so far in 2025, the collection of sargassum has maintained a rapid pace. "To give a little more perspective: in 2024, a total of 1,325 tons were collected. Right now, in September alone, we are about to surpass one thousand tons, so yes, it is work that does not stop," he indicated.

Given this situation, he reiterated the call to the hotel sector to actively collaborate in the cleaning of the beach fronts under their administration. He emphasized that the contribution between authorities, businesses, and citizens is crucial to keeping the beaches clean and in optimal condition for tourism and the local community.

He maintained that the temporary employment program not only seeks to improve the efficiency of beach cleaning but also to offer job opportunities to people in the municipality, in an effort that combines environmental action and social benefit.

Buchanan García underscored that the removal of sargassum does not stop and is part of a permanent environmental agenda that requires human resources, equipment, and inter-sectoral cooperation.

"With this measure, the Tulum City Council continues to reinforce its commitment to the care of the coastline and the sustainable development of the destination," he declared.
