Dziuché, Quintana Roo — After decades of lagging infrastructure, the community of Dziuché is preparing to take a decisive step toward its development: the construction of an access road to the Laguna de Chichan Kanab, a natural paradise that, despite its enormous tourism potential, remains difficult to access. Municipal President Roque Eleuterio Borges Cob revealed that the proposal is advancing at a good pace and that there is a 70 percent probability the project will be approved by the State Government.

"We are waiting for a positive response, but the commitment has been made. The 4.2 kilometers needed to open the roadway have already been measured," explained the mayor, who highlighted that the initiative stems from coordinated work between the City Council and the ejidal commissariat, and was personally presented to Governor Mara Lezama during the program "Platícalo con Todos."

Economic and Tourism Potential

The road would not only facilitate access to the lagoon but could also become a key driver of the local economy. With the new roadway, Dziuché aims to boost tourism in a site with exceptional natural characteristics.

"The Laguna de Chichan Kanab is unique in the center of the Yucatán Peninsula. After Bacalar, there is no other like it. We know that visitors will bring benefits for the small shops, for the families, and we want everything to develop in an orderly manner," assured Borges Cob.

Environmental and Infrastructure Challenges

The municipal president acknowledged that the project faces challenges. Part of the existing infrastructure has suffered damage, such as a pier that was recently affected by a fire, although it has since been restored thanks to the work of the ejidal commissariat. Furthermore, cleaning and sanitation efforts have been carried out, collecting plastics and waste washed in by the rains.

Regarding recent changes in the water's color, Borges Cob clarified that it is a natural phenomenon related to the runoff of materials coming from the state of Campeche during the rainy season.

"It is part of the natural water cycle. Right now the lagoon is already recovering its clarity," he detailed.

A Call for Conservation

The mayor issued a call to both visitors and local residents to care for the lagoon's ecosystem.

"The lagoon is a treasure that belongs to everyone. We want people to come, enjoy, and be amazed, but also to help us keep it clean and alive. The road will be a door to development, but conservation will be the key to our future," he concluded.

The potential approval of the project would mark a turning point for Dziuché, opening up employment opportunities, strengthening community-based tourism, and establishing Chichan Kanab as one of the most attractive natural destinations in the center of the peninsula.
