United States — The Sinaloa Cartel faces one of the most serious accusations in its criminal history: financing terrorism in the United States. The allegation came from prosecutor Pam Bondi, who asserted that the group's operations are not only linked to the trafficking of fentanyl, cocaine, and methamphetamines but also to the funding of activities that risk national security.

A "Hard Blow" According Federal Prosecutors

Following the accusation, U.S. authorities reported the detention of 15 of the 26 leaders indicted in the operation. Bondi described the event as "a hard blow" to the cartel's infrastructure, while other prosecutors highlighted the collaboration of the DEA, the IRS, and national security agencies.

Operation "Recover America"

The offensive is part of the strategy promoted by former President Donald Trump, who designated the Sinaloa Cartel as a Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO). This allows for more severe sanctions when it is demonstrated that drug trafficking is linked to terrorism, increasing the reach of U.S. justice.

Names on the List of the Accused

Among those detained are high-profile names such as Próspero Coronel-Sánchez, José Luis Angulo-Soto, and Ángel Alemán Alatorre-Monge. The complete list includes 26 people, with roles ranging from operational leaders to financial collaborators. The captures were made in various U.S. cities during the past week.

The Security Narrative in the U.S.

The accusation strengthens the security narrative that promotes the idea that transnational drug trafficking not only poisons communities but also funds terrorist networks. With this move, the U.S. government seeks to show concrete results in the fight against cartels.
