Mexico City — The Supreme Court of Justice of Mexico has validated measures implemented by the federal government in 2022 that strengthen regulations on designated smoking areas in establishments. This decision follows previous legal disputes that had temporarily suspended the rules.

The court held a decisive vote to ratify a series of restrictions on establishments with smoking-only spaces. The measure had been suspended due to arguments of unconstitutionality raised by lower courts. The final decision was presented by Justice Lenia Batres, who argued that the regulations reinforce the protection of public health and consolidate tobacco control policies.

The resolution is expected to set a precedent in the defense of regulations that seek to reduce the risks associated with smoking in enclosed spaces and promote a healthier environment for citizens. The decision is seen as a reaffirmation of the judiciary's commitment to public policies established by the executive branch.

This ruling also reflects the strengthening of reforms to the judiciary in Mexico, which seek to consolidate government decisions on matters of public interest.
