Cancún, Mexico — A family from Monterrey, Nuevo León, was among the seven individuals killed in a severe traffic accident in Cancún on the morning of Monday, September 16. The victims included a young couple, Erika Lizeth González Garza and Francisco Gabriel Simental Ochoa, who were to mark their third wedding anniversary on the very day of the fatal collision.

Details of the Fatalities

The deceased have been identified as Erika Lizeth González Garza; her two children, two-and-a-half-year-old Francisco Gabriel Simental González and two-month-old Dandará Simental González; her husband, 34-year-old Francisco Gabriel Simental Ochoa; and his father, 65-year-old Agustín Simental Terrazas. All were from Monterrey, Nuevo León, and had traveled to Cancún to attend a wedding. They were scheduled to return home on September 16.

Additional victims of the crash were Jairo Emmanuel Estella Borges, a 20-year-old driver employed by a rental car company, and Martha Elena Ochoa Téllez, an individual originally from Chihuahua. Four other people were hospitalized with injuries sustained in the accident.

A Tragic Anniversary

According to a social media post from Erika Lizeth González Garza, she and her husband, Francisco Gabriel Simental Ochoa, were celebrating three years of marriage on September 16, 2025, having been wed in 2022. Their social media profiles depicted a young family with two small children, traveling with relatives for a wedding celebration in Cancún just days before the accident.

Account of the Accident

The collision occurred on the Luis Donaldo Colosio Boulevard, near the town of Alfredo V. Bonfil. Preliminary reports indicate that a gray Mitsubishi L200 was traveling south to north on the boulevard. The driver reportedly failed to account for wet road conditions, lost control of the vehicle, and crossed into the oncoming lane.

The Mitsubishi was then struck by a white Toyota Avanza. The impact caused the Mitsubishi L200 to roll over, coming to rest facing north to south, in the direction of the Cancún airport. All of the family members from Monterrey, along with the driver, were passengers in the white Toyota Avanza and died in the collision.
