Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Quintana Roo — The coastal town of Punta Herrero came alive with flavor and tradition last weekend as it hosted the fifth annual Lobster Festival. Organized by the local government, the gastronomic event drew food enthusiasts and visitors from across the Yucatán Peninsula, all eager to savor exquisite dishes crafted from fresh lobster.
A Culinary Showcase
The festival’s centerpiece was a competitive cooking contest featuring participants from regional fishing communities. Entries were divided into two categories: cold dishes and hot dishes. Judges faced the challenging task of selecting winners from a field of creative and expertly prepared lobster-based creations.
In the cold dish category, first place was awarded to the innovative "Lobster Burger," presented by the fishing community of María Elena. Meanwhile, the hot dish category was won by the classic "Garlic Butter Lobster," a signature dish prepared by chefs from Punta Herrero.
Beyond the Kitchen
Beyond the culinary competition, the festival offered a range of recreational activities for attendees of all ages. Children, teens, and adults enjoyed interactive games and explored a marine wildlife photography exhibition organized by the environmental group Amigos de Sian Ka’an. The display highlighted the importance of preserving the region’s biodiversity.
Government Support for Tradition
Zendy Celeste Euan Chan attended the event as a representative of Mayor Mary Hernández, underscoring the local government’s commitment to safeguarding cultural and culinary traditions while promoting sustainable tourism.
The fifth Lobster Festival not only showcased the finest seafood offerings but also served as a gathering point for local fishing families, chefs, and visitors from neighboring regions, reinforcing the cultural identity of Felipe Carrillo Puerto.
