Isla Mujeres, Mexico — The Caribbean Boardwalk of Isla Mujeres has gained a new cultural attraction with the unveiling of the sculpture "Mujer Isleña" ("Island Woman"), a three-meter-tall artwork that pays tribute to the women who have shaped the history and identity of the municipality. The ceremony, led by Mayor Atenea Gómez Ricalde, was part of the 2025 Founding Festivities activities.
A Tribute to Resilience and Heritage
During her speech, Mayor Gómez Ricalde emphasized that the sculpture "reflects the strength, tradition, and love for this land, serving as a living tribute that will endure as a testament to who we are and what we aspire to build."
Created by sculptor Bernardo Luis López Artasánchez, the piece blends cultural identity and artistic beauty. The artist explained that every detail aims to represent the creativity and spirit of the island's women. The installation included enhancements to the surrounding area: a two-meter support base, eight lampposts, three benches, walkways, and landscaping.
Interactive Cultural Experience
Two QR codes were incorporated into the site, linking to interpretations of local folk songs: "Mujer Isleña" by Virgilio "El Chino" Fernández and "Sirenita de Amor" by Isolda Martínez Vera, enriching the experience for visitors and residents alike.
Preserving Legacy for Future Generations
Soledad Che Celis, General Coordinator of Planning, highlighted that the sculpture is part of a comprehensive plan to beautify the boardwalk, boost tourism, and reinforce local identity for future generations.
The event was attended by lifelong chronicler Fidel Villanueva and Lilian Villanueva Chan, Director General of the Quintana Roo Institute of Culture and the Arts, both of whom underscored the importance of preserving cultural heritage.
The celebration concluded with artistic performances by Carlos Pat, the Grupo Añoranzas de Isla Mujeres, the children's dance group Reyes Minis, and singer Julieta Rosado, offering a musical finale that evoked the island's spirit and beauty.
