Tulum Shooting: Gunmen Attack Two Near Tourist Hotspot

Tulum, Mexico — Tulum’s reputation as a tourist hotspot was shaken again this weekend after a violent attack in the heart of the city. Just after midnight on Saturday, gunfire erupted outside the Straw Hat bar, located on Avenida Satélite and Calle Centauro, one of the busiest corners of downtown.

The incident occurred in a matter of seconds: bursts of gunfire shattered the nighttime calm, leaving the victims lying on the pavement as bystanders, caught between confusion and fear, recorded the scene or fled for safety.

According to witnesses, armed men opened fire on a group of people gathered outside the venue. Two men were killed at the scene, while another victim was rushed to the hospital in serious condition. The attack triggered panic among residents and tourists passing through the popular nightlife district.

The incident marks the 35th execution-style killing reported in Tulum so far this year, underscoring the growing presence of organized crime in the area. It also comes just two days after human remains were discovered elsewhere in the municipality, adding to a mounting sense of unease during the administration of Mayor Diego Castañón.

Authorities have yet to release details on possible suspects or motives, but the attack highlights the ongoing security crisis facing one of Quintana Roo’s most visited destinations.

This double homicide adds to the wave of violence that has plagued Tulum in recent months, further damaging the tourist destination’s reputation.
