Cancún, Quintana Roo — A routine traffic stop led to the arrest of two alleged fuel thieves and the uncovering of an illegal fuel distribution network in Cancún’s Lombardo Toledano neighborhood.
Arrests Follow Reckless Driving Incident
According to a statement from Quintana Roo’s Secretariat of Citizen Security, Amisaday N and Raúl N were detained by investigative units after their white Dodge Ram Van was observed driving recklessly. The vehicle abruptly swerved into oncoming traffic while overtaking other cars, endangering motorists along Calle 6, between Calle 8 and Francisco Villa in Supermanzana 74.
Upon being intercepted by traffic officers, the suspects exited the vehicle, hurling insults and threats before physically assaulting the police. Their arrest led to the discovery of eight 20-liter containers in the van’s rear, filled with a liquid resembling diesel.
Police and Naval Forces Uncover Larger Operation
The seizure prompted a joint operation involving State Investigative Police and the Mexican Navy. Hours later, authorities tracked a suspicious truck to two residences in the same neighborhood, where illegal fuel storage was suspected.
At approximately 1:00 p.m., officers raided the properties on Calle 10 Norte, seizing over 200 liters of gasoline, two additional vehicles, and detaining at least three individuals caught unloading fuel containers. The State Attorney General’s Office has initiated legal proceedings, including search warrants.
Residents Report Suspicious Activity
Neighbors confirmed frequent sightings of vehicles making brief stops at the locations, often leaving with containers. These reports reportedly triggered the investigation that culminated in Wednesday’s arrests and seizures.
The case remains under investigation as authorities work to dismantle the illicit network.
