Cancún, Mexico — A new commercial space named Multicomercial is set to open in Cancún in the first quarter of 2026, aiming to boost locally made Mexican products while catering primarily to middle and lower-middle-class consumers. The project was announced during a press conference, with developers emphasizing its strategic central location surrounded by residential areas for easy pedestrian access.
A Modern Marketplace Concept
The shopping center will be located along Avenida Andrés Quintana Roo, ensuring high visibility and convenience for the community. Jorge Antonio Handal Canavati, founding partner of Multicomercial, described the concept as a hybrid between a traditional public market and a modern retail space.
“Imagine a fresh-produce market with the variety, fair pricing, and quality of farm goods, but housed in a commercial space with supermarket comforts—air conditioning, shopping carts, wide aisles, 24-hour security, flexible hours, and constant maintenance,” Handal Canavati explained.
Beyond Retail: Health, Tech, and Entrepreneurship
The complex will expand beyond retail, featuring specialized zones such as:
- A health center offering affordable medical consultations and clinics.
- A technology section for electronics and related services.
- A women’s zone dedicated to female-focused products and services.
- An entrepreneur hub providing training and administrative support for small and medium-sized businesses.
The developers have partnered with state and municipal authorities, as well as the National Confederation of Marketplace Merchant Associations, to ensure the center exclusively sells Mexican-made goods—from fresh produce to handicrafts and manufactured products.
Supporting Local Producers
Handal Canavati emphasized the project’s goal of empowering local producers: “We want to place farmers and entrepreneurs at the heart of the local economy, giving them a dignified space to sell, grow, and connect with consumers.”
Agreements are already underway with artisans, farmers, and merchants to stock the center with authentic Mexican offerings upon its opening.
Related Developments
The announcement follows similar retail projects in Mexico, including a 6-billion-peso commercial plaza in Oaxaca and a newly opened Costco in Zapopan, Jalisco, touted as the country’s largest and most modern.
The Multicomercial initiative reflects a broader trend of blending traditional market elements with contemporary retail conveniences while prioritizing affordability and accessibility for Mexico’s majority consumer base.
