Tulum, Quintana Roo — A severe multi-vehicle collision occurred Saturday afternoon on Federal Highway 307 near kilometer 268, resulting in a child being injured, extensive property damage, and significant traffic delays along one of the Riviera Maya’s busiest routes. The accident took place just past the Barceló Hotel and near the Puerto Aventuras overpass, heading south to north.
Chain-Reaction Crash Blamed on Sudden, Unjustified Stop
Preliminary reports indicate that the driver of a Dodge Attitude abruptly and without cause stopped in the high-speed lane, triggering a chain reaction. A Toyota Prius traveling behind the Dodge slammed on its brakes to avoid a collision, but a marked van belonging to the restaurant “El Maharajá,” allegedly speeding, failed to stop in time and struck the Prius.
A luxury BMW SUV then collided with the van, followed by a Suzuki Swift crashing into the BMW, bringing the total number of vehicles involved to four. Three of the vehicles were declared total losses, while the fourth sustained considerable damage.
Child Hospitalized, Others Sustain Minor Injuries
A five-year-old girl traveling in one of the vehicles received on-site treatment from private paramedics before being transported to a Playa del Carmen hospital for further evaluation. The remaining occupants suffered minor injuries and did not require hospitalization.
Authorities Detain Suspected At-Fault Driver
Members of the National Guard’s Highway Division arrived at the scene to assist with traffic control and conduct the necessary forensic investigations. The Dodge Attitude’s driver was detained as the presumed responsible party for stopping without justification on the highway.
The incident caused traffic disruptions for over an hour as crews worked to clear the wreckage and restore normal flow along this critical artery connecting major tourist destinations in the region. Authorities continue their investigation to determine liability.
