Cancún, Quintana Roo — The municipal government of Benito Juárez anticipates the delivery of nearly 900 body cameras for officers assigned to the Municipal Secretariat of Citizen Security and Transit by July.

Investment and Procurement Process

Ana Patricia Peralta de la Peña, municipal president of Benito Juárez, stated that the delivery of the equipment is expected within 90 days due to the large quantity ordered. She confirmed that the bidding process for the technological equipment has concluded.

Approximately 30 million pesos were allocated for the purchase of the body cameras, funded by revenue generated from environmental sanitation fees under the Security chapter. Peralta de la Peña also noted that regulations were amended to mandate that officers wear the cameras while on duty.

Training and Operational Procedures

Carlos Ernesto D’Amiano Sumuano, secretary of the Municipal Secretariat of Citizen Security and Transit, emphasized that officers will receive training from suppliers to familiarize themselves with the devices.

“The training will ensure personnel understand the equipment, as well as how to receive and securely store the recorded data,” D’Amiano Sumuano said.

The cameras are designed to record continuously from the moment an officer begins their shift until its conclusion. The footage will be stored in organized folders by day and shift for easy retrieval. This system aims to facilitate investigations in cases of complaints or incidents.

Monitoring and Accountability

D’Amiano Sumuano added that the cameras will feature alerts if deactivated, ensuring proper usage and accountability. The measure seeks to enhance transparency and trust in law enforcement operations.

The implementation of body cameras marks a significant step in modernizing policing efforts in Cancún, reinforcing security protocols for both officers and the public.
