Quintana Roo’s First Pro Women’s Basketball Team Debuts

Cancún, MX — In a historic milestone for Quintana Roo, Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa posed with the players of El Calor de Cancún Femenil during the official team photo for the 2025 season of the Liga Caliente.Mx LNBP, marking the state’s first-ever professional women’s basketball team.

A Landmark Achievement for Women’s Sports

Governor Lezama emphasized the significance of the moment, stating, “Today, we take a major step forward. For the first time in history, we have a professional women’s basketball team, and we aim to expand into other disciplines. That’s why we’re reclaiming these sports spaces. You are a woman, and you can spread your wings. We will always say yes to women, yes to sports.”

The team, representing Cancún and Quintana Roo in Mexico’s top-tier professional basketball league, is set to begin competition on Friday, May 2, and Saturday, May 3, with away games against Las Rojas de Veracruz. Their first home game at Poliforum Cancún will take place on Wednesday, May 7, at 8:00 PM, facing Fuerza Regia.

The Team and Its Lineup

During the photo session, Governor Lezama was accompanied by Roberto Alvarado, the team’s general manager, and head coach Juan José “Pepe” Pidal. The players showcased their new white uniforms with orange and gray accents.

The roster includes Quintana Roo natives making history as the first women from the state to compete in professional basketball:

  • Dulce Rocío Pérez Juárez (Cancún)
  • Rosemy del Rosario Martínez Barcelata (Cancún)
  • Karla Liduvina Alcocer Pinkney (Chetumal)

The team is further bolstered by international and national talent:

  • Captain Nina Bogicevic (Serbia)
  • Mihaela Lazic (Croatia)
  • Rennia Davis, Dyaisha Fair, Ariel Destiny Colón, Ilmar’I Thomas, and former WNBA player Charli Collier (United States)
  • Alexia Lagunas and Daniela Rodríguez Molinar (Mexico City)

Supporting Staff and Officials

Also present at the event were Deputy Eric Arcila Arjona and Jacobo Arzate Hop, president of the Quintana Roo Sports Commission (CODEQ). The coaching and support staff includes:

  • Assistant coaches Lisandro Leone and Tadeo Traglia
  • Fitness trainer Rubén Chávez
  • Physiotherapists Mauricio Robledo and Itzel Pech Valadez
  • Equipment manager José “Pelón” Vidales
  • Sports director Raúl Villarreal
  • Team mascot “Flama 33”

The formation of El Calor de Cancún Femenil represents a groundbreaking advancement for women’s sports in Quintana Roo, with the team set to inspire future generations of athletes.
